CHAPTER 48

Wednesday, August 7, 2019

11:40 p.m.

Jo straightened up, and her sky-blue eyes intensified as Mac looked directly at her.

He had to escape, but he also had to let her down easy and not anger her. Thinking that she might respond better to compliments, Mac decided to heap them on.

“Jo, ever since I first saw you, I was immediately attracted to you. I have to be honest,” he said, which was partially true. “But because I am an Assistant State’s Attorney, and you are the Deputy State’s Attorney, I struggled to control my feelings. I know you’re divorced. I’m single. If I had met you anywhere else, I would’ve definitely asked you to go out with me. If only we didn’t work together. I mean, we’d make one hell of a power couple.”

She defensively crossed her legs, subconsciously guarding her most intimate areas, and adopted a more professional, less casual position.

With the indecision of a burglar tiptoeing inside a deserted bank hoping not to trip the motion detectors, Mac continued, “But it just wouldn’t look right for either of us at the SAO. “OK, I get it. You don’t have to go on and on about it. I guess I just let my emotions get the best of me. But you’re absolutely right about one thing: this would never work.”

“It would. It could work,” Mac implored. “It would be amazing. If only we weren’t in the same office. Maybe someday I won’t be working as a prosecutor anymore. I can’t do these murder cases forever. And then we’d make such a formidable pair, you and I.”

“No, no, no, what the hell was I thinking?” Another Arctic blast swept across the apartment. Icicles formed everywhere. Jo stood, gathered the two nearly full Heineken bottles from the coffee table, and rearranged the two coasters. She scrunched up the napkins and turned towards the kitchenette.

“It’s late. You’d better be going.”

“Yes, you’re right.”

The Curse reappeared. There was chaos swirling around Mac’s brain. He instinctively tried to rearrange this unpredictable scene into something orderly.

He had an idea.

“Can I just use the men’s room, uh, bathroom first?”

Jo gestured toward the bedroom door, but didn’t speak. She tipped the two bottles over into the sink, letting the golden liquid pour down the drain, and then she ran the faucet to rinse away all traces of the beer. She tossed the bottles into her garbage can, lifted out the black plastic bag, and spun it into a spiral enclosure. Finally, she tied a knot to seal it, as if to remove all evidence of this fiasco.

While she poured out the beer bottles and noisily
